“The knower of the Self transcends sorrow.”
In the seventh chapter of the Chandogya Upanishad, Sage Narada approaches Guru Sanat Kumara for self-knowledge. Despite being highly erudite in nearly all branches of knowledge, Narada recognizes that in spite of his many and varied accomplishments, he is subject to sorrow. In this chapter, Sanat Kumara unfolds the nature of the self as bhuman — that which is limitlessly big and whole. Knowing the truth of the self as the infinite and imperishable bhuman, one transcends all sorrow. In this retreat, we will study selected excerpts of the 7th chapter with a view to assimilating the knowledge of the self as free of all afflictions.
Mundaka Upanishad 3.2.6 with Swami Muktatmananda
“Vedantavijnanasuniscitarthah”
In this verse, the Mundaka Upanishad speaks about “those for whom the meaning of the vision of Vedanta has been very well ascertained.” Who are they? What is this vision? How does one come to recognize it clearly? And what is the outcome of this very clear ascertainment? All of this is told in this verse and will be unfolded in this course.
